IES Ibn Jaldún – Ibn Jaldún Secondary School
Ibn Jaldún Secondary School is located in northern Dos Hermanas, between the areas of Los Potros and Las Infantas. It is a state school offering Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) and Sixth Form, and is part of a diverse, active and committed educational community dedicated to the education and development of its students.
A Name with a History
Our school was originally known as Torre de Doña María Secondary School, named after the historic estate that is one of the most representative elements of Dos Hermanas’ heritage. The current name is connected to the history of this same site. The site of the Torre de Doña María estate was once home to an Arab-era alquería (rural settlement), for which there is documentary evidence linking it to the family of Ibn Khaldun, one of the great intellectual figures of his time.
Ibn Khaldun (1332–1406) was a historian, philosopher and thinker, born in Tunis into a family of Sevillian origin. He produced highly influential work in the study of history and societies. His thinking was characterised by observation, critical analysis and an interest in understanding the causes underlying the development and transformation of societies.
In 2014, following the reorganisation of educational provision and the incorporation into our school of some of the educational provision previously offered at El Arenal Secondary School, the School Council proposed changing the school’s name. The proposal was officially approved by the Order of 23 July 2015, and the school became known as IES Ibn Jaldún.
Today, the name is an important part of our identity and reminds us of the value of knowledge, intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and understanding our surroundings.
Our School
This is the largest area of the school and consists of two distinct sections. One corresponds to the building constructed in 1998, while the other was formerly part of Blas Infante Primary School.
The building has four floors and houses a large part of the school’s academic activity. It contains the regular classrooms for Years 7 to 9 (1.º–3.º ESO), as well as dedicated Music and Art classrooms, the Biology and Physics and Chemistry laboratory, the Multipurpose Room, which houses our school library, and most of the school’s subject departments.
Traditionally known as the “Gym”, the ground floor contains a covered sports hall, the Physical Education Department and the Computer Room. The first floor houses the Technology Department and Technology classroom.
This is a separate, single-storey building with six classrooms mainly used by Sixth Form students.
Since the 2018–2019 academic year, the school has also had four modular classrooms, added in response to the continued growth in student numbers and to provide additional teaching space.
This diversity of facilities reflects the school’s own development: an institution that has grown and evolved over time in response to the needs of its educational community.
Our Educational Community
Students in ESO mainly come from our partner primary schools: Arco Norte, Maestro Díaz Ferreras and 19 de Abril. In Sixth Form, the vast majority of our students — approximately 90% — continue their studies at our school after completing their ESO education here. We also have Olivar de la Motilla Secondary School and Nuestra Señora de la Compasión School (a state-funded private school) as partner schools, although the number of students who subsequently join our school from these two centres is currently relatively small.
Families also play a fundamental role in the life of our school. The Luis Cernuda Parents’ Association (AMPA), which represents around 230 families, maintains close collaboration with the school and actively participates in numerous activities and initiatives, helping to enrich school life.
The Ibn Jaldún Secondary School currently has 65 teachers, one administrative member of staff and two school caretakers, in addition to the staff responsible for cleaning.
